This superb hand-coloured copper engraving by Jacques de Sève (fl. 1742 – 1788), originates from Louis Leclerc de Buffon’s majestic work "Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière" (General and Particular Natural History). The work was published in Paris, 1770. De Sève was commissioned by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon to provide the quadruped illustrations for Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière (1749-1778, in 36 volumes) (François-Nicolas Martinet did the birds) and then Buffon's Recueil de Vingtquatre Plantes et Fleurs (1772). He also illustrated work by Duhamel du Monceau, Claude Perrault (later editions) and parts of Encyclopédie Méthodique. His illustrations are sometimes exact anatomical representations or show the animals against landscape backgrounds. They were engraved by Louis Le Grand. His son, Jacques Eustache also worked as an artist and engraver, contributing to the later Suites à Buffon. Together father and son produced thousands of illustrations.Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a prominent French naturalist and scientist of the 18th century. He is renowned for his significant contributions to natural history, particularly through his work "Histoire Naturelle". His writings encompass various aspects of the animal kingdom, including zoology, botany, and geology. These hand-coloured engravings by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort after Claude Aubriet, originates from ”Institutiones rei herbariae. Editio tertia... 3rd ed. (in fact second latin ed.)”. The work was published in Paris, 1719. This work is considered to be one of Tournefort's major botanical works. Linné (Linnaeus) named the plant Tournefortia after him. The present edition is in fact the second Latin edition, the first edition refers to the 'Élémens de botanique'; Hunt 450: "Tournefort's significance lies in the fact of having classified all plants into genera. Hundreds of the generic names coined or accepted by him were later adopted by Linnaeus and are in use today ." Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a French botanist and explorer, renowned for his contributions to the field of botany. He is best known for his work "Institutiones rei herbariae," which provided a systematic classification of plants into genera, laying the groundwork for future botanical studies. Tournefort's classification system was influential and was later expanded upon by Carl Linnaeus, who named the genus Tournefortia in his honor. Tournefort traveled extensively, particularly in the Mediterranean region, where he studied various plant species and gathered valuable specimens. His meticulous observations and detailed descriptions helped to advance the understanding of plant taxonomy and botanical nomenclature during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These magnificent chromolithographs are from the Elias Fries ”Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar” (Sweden's Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms). The work was published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm between&nbsp;1860 and 1866.&nbsp; Elias Fries, often called the "father of mycology," published several groundbreaking works on fungi during the first half of the 19th century. "Sveriges ätliga och giftiga svampar" was published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and P. A. Norstedt &amp; Sons, reflecting its dual purpose as both scientifically accurate and educational, focusing on the use of mushrooms. It was released over seven years in ten separate installments. The colorful plates were executed in chromolithography by A. J. Salmson based on drawings by Elias&nbsp;Pettersson and Petter Åkerlund. Hand-coloured engraving by Pierre-Quentin Chedel after François Boucher originates from the first edition of Antoine Joseph Dezallier de Argenville’s work ”L’histoire naturelle éclaircie dans deux de ses parties principales. La Lithologie et la Conchyliologie, dont l'une traite des Pierres et l'autre des Coquillages”. The work was published in Paris, 1742. Pierre-Quentin Chedel (1705–1763) was a French engraver and illustrator active during the 18th century. He is known for his detailed and elegant copperplate engravings, which often accompanied scientific, historical, and artistic works. Chedel collaborated with prominent artists of his time, such as François Boucher, for whom he created engravings that brought intricate designs to life.
