”Planisphaerium Terrestre” This decorative double hemisphere map of the world originates from the Johann Hubner’s ”Reales Staats- und Zeitungs- und Conversations-Lexicon”. The work was published in Leipzig, 1777. This captivating historical map offers a unique glimpse into early cartographic interpretations of the world. Notably, New Zealand and Van Diemen's Land (modern-day Tasmania) are depicted as connected, with the mysterious Bay de St. Philippe marked in New Zealand. The mention of this bay remains enigmatic and could potentially support a Māori oral tradition suggesting that a European ship arrived before Captain Cook's renowned voyage. The map presents California as a distinct island, a common misconception in early cartography. The northeastern coast of Asia stretches tantalizingly close to Alaska, while Australia appears incomplete, and the Southern (Antarctic) continent is conspicuously absent. Among its intriguing features, Louisiana is placed west of the Great Lakes, and Florida curiously appears at the mouth of the Mississippi River, deviating from its modern geographic position. L. M. Steinberger (1713–1772) was a German engraver, known for his detailed copper engravings, particularly in the field of cartography. Active during the 18th century, he contributed to the visual representation of maps and scholarly works. His engravings often featured significant historical, geographical, and cultural content, and he was involved in producing illustrations for various publications during his time. This hand-coloured engraving by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort after Claude Aubriet, originates from ”Institutiones rei herbariae. Editio tertia... 3rd ed. (in fact second latin ed.)”. The work was published in Paris, 1719. This work is considered to be one of Tournefort's major botanical works. Linné (Linnaeus) named the plant Tournefortia after him. The present edition is in fact the second Latin edition, the first edition refers to the 'Élémens de botanique'; Hunt 450: "Tournefort's significance lies in the fact of having classified all plants into genera. Hundreds of the generic names coined or accepted by him were later adopted by Linnaeus and are in use today ." Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) was a French botanist and explorer, renowned for his contributions to the field of botany. He is best known for his work "Institutiones rei herbariae," which provided a systematic classification of plants into genera, laying the groundwork for future botanical studies. Tournefort's classification system was influential and was later expanded upon by Carl Linnaeus, who named the genus Tournefortia in his honor. Tournefort traveled extensively, particularly in the Mediterranean region, where he studied various plant species and gathered valuable specimens. His meticulous observations and detailed descriptions helped to advance the understanding of plant taxonomy and botanical nomenclature during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. De La Court Van Der Voort's influential reference work on the construction and design of country houses ("buitenplaatsen"), based on his personal experience with his own country house, Berbice (Voorschoten). This work is notable for its impact on garden history, including the design of orangery and garden walls.
