9956 John Webber (1751–1793) - The Tchuktchi People and their Habitations - Copperplate Engraving (Late 18th Century)

This copperplate engraving is a large ethnographic plate depicting two figures of the Tchuktchi people in their distinctive cold-weather garments, standing before their temporary tent dwellings. The scene captures the landscape and indigenous culture encountered in the northern Pacific or Siberian regions during the major voyages of exploration.
John Webber was an English artist who served as the official artist aboard HMS Resolution during Captain James Cook’s third and final voyage of exploration in the Pacific. His detailed drawings of landscapes, cultures, and people from the voyage were later engraved and published, establishing an important visual record of the late 18th-century world.
