10024 Abbé Prévost (1697–1763) – View of the Coast from Mina to Maure (West Africa) – Copper engraving (1750)

This copper engraving is a topographical view of the West African coastline, detailing the area between the key trading posts of Mina and Maure. The scene shows several European sailing vessels and a canoe carrying figures in the foreground. On the shore, a fortified European establishment, labeled Fort Royal de Martin, is visible. The view was drawn from the accounts of Barbot and Smith for inclusion in the Histoire générale des voyages, documenting European commerce and coastal geography in West Africa.
Abbé Prévost (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles) was a French novelist, historian, and cleric of the 18th century, best known for his novel Manon Lescaut. Crucially for this work, he was the primary editor and compiler of the multi-volume Histoire générale des voyages, a monumental compendium that synthesized and documented the accounts of European exploration and geographical knowledge from around the globe.
