This copper engraving is a topographical illustration showing the mountain defile or pass used by a European ambassador to enter China. The view depicts a massive mountain range and a fortified structure in the valley, with a caravan of people and animals traveling through the pass. The title references the scale of the pass, and the accompanying text identifies landmarks such as military posts and watchtowers, documenting the travel routes used for diplomatic missions. The engraving was published in the Histoire générale des voyages.

Abbé Prévost (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles) was a French novelist, historian, and cleric of the 18th century, best known for his novel Manon Lescaut. Crucially for this work, he was the primary editor and compiler of the multi-volume Histoire générale des voyages, a monumental compendium that synthesized and documented the accounts of European exploration and geographical knowledge from around the globe, which included numerous detailed topographical engravings.
