"Nouvelle Hollande" This map displays the Australian continent, referred to as New Holland, and the surrounding islands of Central Oceania as understood in the early nineteenth century. The hand-coloured etching features a decorative title vignette in the lower left corner depicting an indigenous figure with a spear alongside a kangaroo and a dingo in a coastal landscape. This cartographic work was published in the Precis de la Geographie Universelle, a comprehensive geographical atlas printed in Paris by Francois Buisson. Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-French geographer and journalist who became one of the most significant figures in nineteenth-century cartography. After being exiled from Denmark for his political writings, he settled in Paris where he co-founded the Societe de Geographie. He spent much of his career producing the monumental Universal Geography series which sought to provide a detailed and systematic description of every region in the world. His maps are noted for their scientific rigour and their integration of contemporary political borders with physical topographical features. Artist or Maker: Conrad Malte-Brun. "Mappe-Monde sur Diverses Projections" This hand-coloured engraving presents a comprehensive study of the world through multiple cartographic perspectives. The central focus consists of two large eastern and western hemispheres, while the surrounding composition features six smaller inset maps showing the globe from the north and south poles, Mercator projections, and other mathematical variations. At the top center, a decorative allegorical vignette depicts figures representing different continents gathered around a banner, situated within a tropical landscape with a palm tree. This plate was published in the Précis de la Géographie Universelle, printed in Paris by Aimé André. Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-French geographer and prolific writer who is considered a central figure in the development of modern geographical science. After being exiled from Denmark for his political views, he settled in Paris where he co-founded the Société de Géographie and began his monumental work, the Précis de la Géographie Universelle. His approach combined rigorous physical geography with ethnography and history, aiming to provide a complete description of the known world. "Carte de la N.lle Zelande visitee en 1769 et 1770 par le Lieutenant J. Cook Commandant de l'Endeavour" This engraving presents a detailed hydrographic chart of the North and South Islands of New Zealand, representing the first complete coastal survey of the archipelago by a European expedition. The map features the track of the HMS Endeavour as it circumnavigated the islands, with numerous soundings, navigational hazards, and coastal landmarks recorded. A significant explanatory text block in the upper right corner details the symbols used for rocks and shoals, while a large compass rose indicates the orientation of the chart. This plate was published in the French edition of James Cook's voyages, translated by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Suard and printed in Paris. James Cook was a British naval captain, navigator, and cartographer who achieved global fame for his three voyages of discovery to the Pacific Ocean. "Provinciae, Regionis Galliae, vera exactissimaq. descriptio" This engraving presents a detailed topographical map of the Provence region in southeastern France, extending from the Rhone river to the borders of Italy and the Mediterranean coast. The cartography delineates the rugged coastal geography, including major ports such as Marseille and Toulon, alongside the mountainous interior and fertile valleys. The landscape is populated with numerous fortified towns, villages, and river systems rendered with precision. The composition is notable for its elaborate decorative elements, including a large architectural title cartouche in the upper left corner and a sea featuring several sailing vessels, including a prominent galleon and a smaller lateen-rigged boat. This work was published in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus, printed in Amsterdam by Guiljelmus Blaeu. Pierre-Jean Bompar was a French physician and geographer based in Draguignan who is primarily remembered for his significant contributions to the cartography of Provence. His regional survey, first produced in the late sixteenth century, became the definitive geographic record of the area and was subsequently adopted and refined by the major Dutch publishing houses of the seventeenth century. Bompar's work was highly valued for its accuracy in representing the complex topography and urban distribution of the French south. His maps served as the primary source for the Provence plates in the monumental atlases of both the Blaeu and Janssonius firms.
