Description‘Comitatvs Brechiniae’This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Comitatvs Brechiniae’, which translates to ‘County of Brecknock’. The United Kingdom in the early 17th century was a vastly different place than it is today. The country was divided into smaller regions, many of which had their own unique customs and cultures. The map shows the central region of Brecknock, which was known for its rolling hills and fertile valleys. The towns of Brecon, Merthyr Cynog, and Talachddu are located in the centre of the map, surrounded by smaller villages and hamlets. The map provides a glimpse into life in this part of the country over 350 years ago. Joan, or Johannes, Blaeu (1596-1673) was the son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu. He inherited his father’s meticulous and striking mapmaking style and continued the Blaeu workshop until it burned in 1672.
