11618 Conrad Malte-Brun (1775-1826) – World Map on Various Projections – World – Engraving (Hand-coloured) (1837)
"Mappe-Monde sur Diverses Projections" This hand-coloured engraving presents a comprehensive study of the world through multiple cartographic perspectives. The central focus consists of two large eastern and western hemispheres, while the surrounding composition features six smaller inset maps showing the globe from the north and south poles, Mercator projections, and other mathematical variations. At the top center, a decorative allegorical vignette depicts figures representing different continents gathered around a banner, situated within a tropical landscape with a palm tree. This plate was published in the Précis de la Géographie Universelle, printed in Paris by Aimé André.
Conrad Malte-Brun was a Danish-French geographer and prolific writer who is considered a central figure in the development of modern geographical science. After being exiled from Denmark for his political views, he settled in Paris where he co-founded the Société de Géographie and began his monumental work, the Précis de la Géographie Universelle. His approach combined rigorous physical geography with ethnography and history, aiming to provide a complete description of the known world. Malte-Brun's publications were translated into numerous languages and remained the definitive geographical references for scholars and educators throughout much of the nineteenth century.
