10038 Maerten de Vos (1532–1603) – Saint Quirinus in the Wilderness – Copper engraving (1590)

This copper engraving depicts the Christian hermit Saint Quirinus seated by a river in a wooded wilderness. The figure, dressed in robes and a pointed hat, is engrossed in reading a religious text, with a small crucifix marking his devotional spot. The dense landscape and detailed rendering of the water and foliage reflect the style of late 16th-century Northern Mannerism. The scene illustrates the hermit's dedication to prayer and separation from worldly concerns.
Maerten de Vos was a highly influential Flemish painter and draftsman of the late 16th century, working in the Mannerist style. Although primarily a painter, he is best known for the hundreds of designs he created for copperplate engravers, which popularized his religious and allegorical subjects across Europe. He was a central figure in the Antwerp school of painting.
