9955 John Webber (1751–1793) - The Body of Tee, a Chief, in Otaheite - Copperplate Engraving (Late 18th Century)
This copperplate engraving is a large ethnographic plate depicting a funerary ritual inside a thatched hut in Otaheite. The scene shows the body of the chief, Tee, lying in state with protective cloths and a large ceremonial crest placed above the hut. A figure stands outside the hut, observing the ritual. The print documents the cultural customs observed during the great voyages of exploration.
John Webber was an English artist who served as the official artist aboard HMS Resolution during Captain James Cook’s third and final voyage of exploration in the Pacific. His detailed drawings of landscapes, cultures, and people from the voyage were later engraved and published, establishing an important visual record of the late 18th-century world.
