9954 John Webber (1751–1793) - Summer and Winter Habitations in Kamtschatka - Copperplate Engraving (Late 18th Century)

This copperplate engraving is a large ethnographic and topographical plate depicting indigenous dwellings in Kamchatka, Siberia. The scene features two types of structures—conical, earth-covered winter homes and raised summer dwellings—situated on a sloping hillside. The print documents the architecture and landscape encountered during the great voyages of exploration.
John Webber was an English artist who served as the official artist aboard HMS Resolution during Captain James Cook’s third and final voyage of exploration in the Pacific. His detailed drawings of landscapes, cultures, and people from the voyage were later engraved and published, establishing an important visual record of the late 18th-century world.
