This copperplate engraving is a detailed perspective map, or bird's-eye view, depicting the fortified city of Arras. The plan displays the city's extensive defensive fortifications, internal street layout, and the division between the main city and its adjacent suburb or citadel. The plate originated from a major geographical work documenting the cities of the Low Countries.

Lodovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, historian, and diplomat who lived in Antwerp. He is renowned for his influential geographical and historical description of the Low Countries, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, which included numerous detailed plans of cities and regions.
