9902 Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) - Citrus and Figs - Hand-colored Engraving (Late 18th Century)

This hand-colored engraving depicts several types of cultivated fruits from warm climates. The composition features various citrus fruits, including lemons and oranges, shown whole and in cross-section with their associated leaves and flowers. The lower section illustrates figs and an almond branch. The plate was created for Bertuch's encyclopedic work, Bilderbuch für Kinder.
Friedrich Johann Justin Bertuch was a German publisher, naturalist, and writer. He is renowned for conceiving and editing the Bilderbuch für Kinder, an illustrated encyclopedia intended to educate children about natural history, science, geography, and culture through highly detailed copperplate engravings.
