This hand-colored engraving depicts four separate views of a marine bivalve mollusk. The views include the exterior of the shell from different angles, one with an exaggerated byssus or foot, and a final view illustrating the internal anatomy of the specimen. Richard Polydore Nodder was a British natural history illustrator and engraver who contributed numerous detailed zoological and botanical plates to significant scientific publications. He continued the work of his father, Frederick Polydore Nodder, collaborating on works such as The Naturalist's Miscellany in the early 19th century.
