9895 Frederick Polydore Nodder (Active 1770–1800) - Life Cycle of a Sphinx Moth - Hand-colored Engraving (Late 18th Century)

This hand-colored engraving illustrates two stages of an insect's life cycle. The upper image displays a large, green caterpillar with white banding and a prominent horn, climbing a twig. The lower image shows the reddish-brown pupa, or chrysalis. The illustration is typical of entomological plates produced for British natural history works of the period.
Frederick Polydore Nodder was a British natural history illustrator and engraver. He is known for producing countless high-quality plates for scientific works, including contributions to Sir Joseph Banks's Florilegium and illustrations for George Shaw's The Naturalist's Miscellany, often specializing in detailed entomological and botanical subjects.
