This hand-colored copperplate engraving is a large-format botanical illustration depicting two distinct color forms of the Cardinal Flower, a species of Lobelia, shown growing side-by-side. The print highlights the striking contrast between the intense red flowers of the common form and the delicate blue blooms of the variant, both situated on leafy, erect stems. This illustration was published in Johann Wilhelm Weinmann's monumental work, Phytanthoza Iconographia, one of the most comprehensive and visually elaborate botanical encyclopedias of the 18th century, documenting flora from around the world.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was an 18th-century German apothecary and botanist best known for commissioning and financing the creation of the Phytanthoza Iconographia. Although he served as the publisher, he is credited as the author of this seminal work, which contained over a thousand meticulously illustrated and scientifically important plates of flora from both German gardens and international collections, making it a key reference in pre-Linnaean botany.
