Bernard de Montfaucon was a revered French Benedictine monk and scholar considered one of the founders of modern archaeology and paleography. His monumental ten-volume work, L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, was the first systematic attempt to comprehensively illustrate and catalog the surviving material culture of the classical world, profoundly influencing Enlightenment-era research and the study of ancient iconography and artifacts.
