9836 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Votive Hands (Mains Votives) and Sabazios Symbols – Copperplate engraving (c. 1719–1724)

This copperplate engraving features a scholarly collection of nine illustrations detailing various ancient votive hands, which were ritual objects used in religious cults of antiquity, notably that of Jupiter Sabazios. Each hand is shown in a distinct gesture and is richly decorated with symbolic relief carvings of deities, animals (snakes and chameleons), or religious objects, typically mounted on small pedestals bearing inscriptions. This print was published in Bernard de Montfaucon's authoritative L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, a major work that systematically cataloged the material remnants of classical ritual culture.
Bernard de Montfaucon was a revered French Benedictine monk and scholar considered one of the founders of modern archaeology and paleography. His monumental ten-volume work, L'Antiquité Expliquée et Représentée en Figures, was the first systematic attempt to comprehensively illustrate and catalog the surviving material culture of the classical world, profoundly influencing Enlightenment-era research and the study of ancient iconography and artifacts.
