This hand-colored copperplate engraving presents a detailed botanical study of the Pasque Flower, characterized by its large, solitary, deep purple, bell-shaped flower and finely dissected, hairy foliage. The illustration meticulously depicts the whole plant structure, including the rootstock and the associated floral dissections, which were included to aid in its scientific classification. This print is a prime example of the scientific accuracy upheld in English Botany, a definitive work on British flora.

James Sowerby was a prominent English natural history illustrator, known for his work across botany, zoology, and mineralogy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is most famous for illustrating the vast English Botany, in collaboration with James Edward Smith, and for publishing his own works such as the Mineralogy of Great Britain. His style is recognized for its combination of scientific accuracy and artistic delicacy in depicting specimens.
