This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Ursine Sloth, known today as the Sloth Bear, resting upon a grassy patch. The illustration captures the animal's distinctively shaggy coat and long, curved claws, features that initially led early naturalists to debate its classification. It was published in The Naturalist's Miscellany, a significant zoological series dedicated to documenting diverse species with scientific accuracy and artistic detail.

Frederick Polydore Nodder was a British natural history artist and engraver active during the 18th Century. He served as the Botanic Painter to Queen Charlotte and is best remembered for his extensive work illustrating The Naturalist's Miscellany in collaboration with George Shaw. His engravings are recognized for their fine lines and careful hand-coloring, making them important records of the flora and fauna studied during the era.
