9044 Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741) – Palatium Roma and Sepulchre of Cestius (Rome, Italy) – Engraving (1704)

This print contains two topographical and architectural illustrations of Roman sites in Rome, Italy. The upper view, titled "Palatium Roma," is a high-angle perspective plan of the Palatine Hill area, showing the outlines of various ancient structures and walls. The lower illustration provides a ground-level view of the Pyramid of Cestius, an ancient burial monument, standing next to a stretch of the city walls. A panel of inscribed text provides a description of the site. This engraving served as archaeological documentation for Bernard de Montfaucon’s extensive work on classical antiquity.
Bernard de Montfaucon was an influential French Benedictine scholar and a seminal figure in the development of modern archaeology and paleography. His primary academic achievement was the ten-volume illustrated encyclopedia, "L'Antiquité expliquée et representée en figures," which systematically cataloged and described the artifacts, monuments, and architecture of the ancient world.
