Louis Auguste de Sainson was a French naval artist and draftsman who served as the official artist on Jules Dumont d'Urville's expedition aboard the corvette l'Astrolabe (1826–1829). His prolific output of meticulously detailed drawings provided a comprehensive visual record of the landscapes, natural history, and ethnographic subjects encountered on the voyage, including the urban scenes of China, which were then reproduced as high-quality engravings for the voyage's official published atlas.
