8985 Jakob van der Schley (1715–1779) – View of the Mountains named Sierra Leone – Engraving (c. 1755)

This topographical and ethnographic print features two distinct images relating to Sierra Leone, West Africa. The upper panel, titled Vue des Montagnes nommées Sierra Leona (View of the Mountains named Sierra Leone), shows a long, low mountain range viewed from the sea, emphasizing the coastal topography. The lower panel, titled Maisons de Sierra Leona (Houses of Sierra Leone), depicts a small indigenous settlement, including several distinct round, conical thatched huts and a square hut, situated in a tropical landscape with palm trees. This print originates from Abbé Prévost's influential encyclopedic work, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
