124 Louis Auguste de Sainson (1801–1887) – Cochinchina - Philippines: Cochinchinese Women and Tagalog Man – Lithograph (Circa 1833)

This large lithograph presents two ethnographic vignettes. On the left, two "Femmes Cochinchinoises" (women from Cochinchina, Vietnam) are shown in traditional dress. On the right, a "Tagal" (Tagalog man from the Philippines) is depicted holding a fighting cock, a reference to the popular pastime, with other figures in the background. The print is Plate 51 from the Atlas Pittoresque accompanying the official account of the Astrolabe expedition.
Louis Auguste de Sainson was a French artist who served as the official draughtsman on the Astrolabe, commanded by Jules Dumont d'Urville, during its first circumnavigation (1826-1829). He was responsible for documenting the landscapes, inhabitants, and customs encountered during the voyage, creating a vital visual record of Oceania, Asia, and Australia.
