This large lithograph is an ethnographic study of the inhabitants of Manila, Philippines. It is divided into two vignettes: "Tagals homme et femme" (Tagalog man and woman) on the left, and "Metis homme et femme" (Mestizo man and woman) on the right, showcasing their distinct traditional attire. This print was published in the Atlas Pittoresque accompanying the official account of the Astrolabe expedition.
Louis Auguste de Sainson was a French artist who served as the official draughtsman on the Astrolabe, commanded by Jules Dumont d'Urville, during its first circumnavigation (1826-1829). He was responsible for documenting the landscapes, inhabitants, and customs encountered during the voyage, creating a vital visual record of Oceania, Asia, and Australia.
