194 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Exotic Fruits and Plants from the Dutch East Indies – Engraving (1724–1726)

This antique botanical engraving features a grid of 18 detailed illustrations depicting various exotic plants, fruits, flowers, and seeds native to the Dutch East Indies. Included are representations of clove, nutmeg, durian, tamarind, citrus, and other tropical species important to trade and medicine during the colonial era. Each botanical subject is isolated within its own compartment, labeled with a Roman numeral and rendered with fine engraving in a scientific and observational style. This plate was published as part of Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, the monumental encyclopedic work by François Valentijn documenting the geography, flora, fauna, and ethnography of the East Indies under Dutch rule.
François Valentijn was a Dutch theologian, historian, and naturalist who lived for many years in the East Indies. His five-volume work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726) is one of the most comprehensive sources on the geography, flora, fauna, and cultures of Southeast Asia during the early 18th century. The engravings included in the work are highly valued for their early representations of native wildlife and colonial landscapes.
