160 Olof Rudbeck the Younger (1660–1740), after – Ptarmigan (Tetrix Tectrix) – Offset print

This distinctive, large-format print illustrates a Ptarmigan (historically referenced as Tetrix Tectrix), a species of Arctic grouse found in Scandinavia and other high-latitude regions. The bird is meticulously depicted in its dense winter plumage, which is predominantly white-grey, with a prominent red comb above the eye and densely feathered feet adapted for snow. This work is based on one of the celebrated illustrations found in the Great Bird Book (Fogelboken), the remarkable, yet unpublished, manuscript of Swedish birds from the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Olof Rudbeck the Younger was a Swedish naturalist and physician, recognized as a pioneer in ornithology. Following an expedition to Lapland, he created the Great Bird Book, a collection of nearly 1,000 highly accurate and naturalistic watercolor drawings of Swedish birds, intended for publication but never formally printed during his lifetime. The illustrations served as the foundation for the revolutionary ornithological lectures he gave at Uppsala University and later influenced his student, Carl Linnaeus, in the naming and classification of species.
