180 William Curtis (1746–1799) – Bauhinia Monandra (Butterfly Bauhinia) – Hand-coloured lithograph (Circa 1897)

This highly decorative botanical illustration showcases a tropical flowering plant, likely the Bauhinia Monandra (Butterfly Bauhinia or Orchid Tree). The print meticulously details the large, creamy white flower, characterized by its ruffled edges highlighted in golden yellow, along with the foliage and reproductive structures shown in surrounding technical insets. This exotic species was documented for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, the renowned British horticultural and botanical serial published for over two centuries to catalogue newly introduced plants grown in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and other specialized collections.
William Curtis was an English apothecary and botanist who founded The Botanical Magazine in 1787. Initially a demonstrator of plants at the Chelsea Physic Garden, Curtis established the magazine as an accessible and affordable vehicle for introducing exotic and ornamental plants to gardeners and botanists. Though Curtis himself died relatively early, the publication continued under a succession of editors—including Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, Director of Kew—to become the longest continuously published and most authoritative botanical serial in history.
