129 George Shaw (1751–1813) – Round-Tailed Trichechus – Copperplate engraving (1800)

This antique print depicts the Round-Tailed Trichechus, a historical name for the African Manatee (Trichechus senegalensis). The aquatic mammal is shown resting on a rocky or icy surface, rendered in meticulous detail typical of early systematic natural history studies. The illustration originated from the section on Mammalia in the multi-volume series General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, authored by George Shaw and published in London. The engraving was executed by James Heath, based on an earlier illustration by Thomas Pennant.
George Shaw was a highly influential English zoologist and botanist, and a co-founder of the Linnean Society of London. He served as the Assistant Keeper and later Keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum. His scientific writings, including General Zoology and The Naturalist's Miscellany, were critical in cataloging and disseminating knowledge about newly discovered global flora and fauna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
