154 Francis Orpen Morris (1810–1893) – Tawny Owl – Hand-coloured engraving (Circa 1860)

This antique print illustrates the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), one of the most common owl species found in Britain. The bird is shown perched on a branch, looking directly forward, with distinctive dark eyes set within its circular facial discs. Its plumage is characterized by warm brown and rust-colored tones, marked with darker streaking, typical of the bird's natural camouflage. This natural history illustration originated from the vast six-volume work A History of British Birds, a significant 19th-century ornithological publication intended for the general public.
Francis Orpen Morris was a respected English clergyman and naturalist best known for his accessible and comprehensive works on ornithology, entomology, and botany. Born in County Cork, Ireland, he served as a vicar in Yorkshire for much of his career. His association with the renowned color printer Benjamin Fawcett resulted in several highly popular natural history publications, of which A History of British Birds is considered his magnum opus. Morris was also an early and vocal advocate for animal welfare, playing a foundational role in the movement that led to the establishment of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
