56 Giocondo Albertolli (1742–1839) – Set of 2: Geometric and Vegetal Design and Ceiling Design with Cherubs – Copper Engraving (1778–82)

This set of two large architectural plates presents contrasting neoclassical decorative compositions. The first print, Geometric and Vegetal, focuses on highly detailed, linear patterns combining restrained flora with precise classical geometry, showcasing the refinement of surface design. The second, Ceiling Design with Cherubs, Laurels, features a more ornate and illustrative composition intended for grand interior spaces, emphasizing symmetrical arrangement of cherubs, foliate scrolls, and laureate wreaths. These prints served as essential master copies for architects, stucco workers, and artisans throughout Europe, instrumental in defining the Italian Neoclassical aesthetic.
Giocondo Albertolli (1742–1839) was a leading figure in neoclassical architectural ornament. As a professor of design in Milan, he published multiple collections of architectural plates, which were widely used by architects and artisans. His work emphasized classical symmetry, mathematical proportion, and the refinement of antique decorative systems.
