This elegant botanical illustration centers on a cluster of white flowers, a species of Rhododendron or Azalea, distinguished by its long, staminal filaments and the delicate white corolla marked with a yellow or greenish-yellow blotch on the upper petals. The flowers emerge alongside elongated, thick, dark green leaves with prominent veining. This print originates from Curtis's Botanical Magazine, the eminent journal founded by William Curtis. The medium of copperplate engraving, finished with meticulous hand-coloring, was employed to achieve a high degree of fidelity to the living specimen.

William Curtis was an English botanist and apothecary who founded the celebrated Botanical Magazine in 1787. This long-running periodical was dedicated to illustrating "the plants of the Royal Gardens of Kew and of other botanical establishments," setting the standard for accessible, accurate, and beautifully illustrated botanical publications.
