  • Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) – The Roach (Cyprinus erythrophthalmus)

This hand-coloured engraving is a detailed ichthyological illustration of a roach, scientifically named Cyprinus erythrophthalmus. The print, from Marcus Elieser Bloch's monumental work on fish, depicts the creature in profile, showcasing its silvery scales and vibrant red fins. To the left, a smaller, uncoloured illustration provides a detailed view of an internal bone or cross-section. The scientific, German, and French names for the fish are provided in the top right corner. This work is a fine example of Bloch's encyclopedic efforts to document the world's fish species.

Marcus Elieser Bloch was a prominent German physician and naturalist, and a pioneer in the field of ichthyology. He is best known for authoring the Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische (General Natural History of Fish), a comprehensive and richly illustrated work published in twelve volumes. His work was a landmark of its time, celebrated for its scientific accuracy and its beautiful, hand-coloured engravings.
