This historical zoological woodcut depicts a wild, horned animal, native Mouflon (wild sheep or ram) of Sardinia, standing in a realistic profile. This illustration was published as a small vignette within the pages of the exhaustive geographical compendium, the Cosmographia universalis. The inclusion of such regional fauna served to visually enrich the accompanying descriptive text on the geography and natural history of the island of Sardinia.

Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebraist scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (first published 1544), was the earliest comprehensive German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of maps, city views, and illustrations that visually documented world geography, history, and ethnography, establishing a new standard for scholarly and accessible

publications in 16th-century Europe.
