35 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Sardinia and Corsica – Woodcut (Circa 1550)

This historical geographical map charts the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica, detailing the topography, major settlements (rendered in miniature pictorial style), and coastal features of both islands. The map extends to include the northern coast of Africa and part of the Italian mainland, showcasing the strategic position of these islands in the western Mediterranean. This map was originally published in The Second Book of Münster’s comprehensive geographical encyclopaedia, the Cosmographia universalis.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (first published 1544), was the earliest German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of maps, city views, and illustrations that visually documented world geography, history, and ethnography, establishing a new standard for scholarly and accessible publications in 16th-century Europe.
