38 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Dance of the Wends or Wandals – Woodcut (Circa 1550)

This historical and ethnographic woodcut depicts a scene of social custom in Central Europe, likely illustrating the practices of the Wends or Wandals (historical groups inhabiting Slavic regions of Germany). The scene shows several male figures engaged in a folk dance, joined in a circle, with one figure standing prominently to the side. This illustration was published within The Third Book of the massive encyclopedic work, Cosmographia universalis, to accompany the text describing the customs, history, and people of the German lands and their neighbors.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebraist scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (first published 1544), was the earliest German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of city views, maps, and illustrations that visually documented world geography, history, and ethnography, establishing a new standard for scholarly and accessible publications in 16th-century Europe.
