39 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Noblemen and Peasant Figures in a Mountainous Landscape – Woodcut (Circa 1550)

This historical and ethnographic woodcut vignette illustrates a scene set in a mountainous region of Central Europe, likely the German Lands. The foreground features three prominent male figures dressed in 16th-century attire, with one in the center holding a staff or walking stick, surrounded by a rural landscape that includes a distant fortified building and winding paths. This image documents the social and physical environment of the German provinces and was included as an ethnographic illustration in the influential geographical and historical encyclopaedia, Cosmographia universalis.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebraist scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (first published 1544), was the earliest German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of city views, maps, and illustrations that visually documented world geography, history, and ethnography, establishing a new standard for scholarly and accessible publications in 16th-century Europe.
