41 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Holland and Friesland – Woodcut (Circa 1550)

This historical geographical map illustrates the provinces of Holland and Friesland in the Netherlands, showing an early depiction of the coastal and interior regions of the Low Countries. The woodcut clearly delineates towns, rivers, and the coastline, often including small details such as sailing ships. This map was originally published in the Third Book of Münster's encyclopedic work, the Cosmographia universalis, a monumental volume that sought to compile all contemporary geographical and historical knowledge.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebraist scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (first published 1544), was the earliest German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of accurate maps and city views, utilizing the medium of woodcut to widely disseminate geographical knowledge across 16th-century Europe. Münster's meticulous and scholarly approach set a new standard for geographical publications.
