32 Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – View of Constantinople with Fortifications – Woodcut (Circa 1550)

This woodcut was published in the influential geographical and historical encyclopaedia, Cosmographia universalis.
Sebastian Münster was a pioneering German cartographer, cosmographer, and Hebraist scholar of the Renaissance. His magnum opus, the Cosmographia universalis (1544), was the earliest German-language description of the world. It contained a vast collection of city views, maps, and illustrations, utilizing woodcut technology to widely disseminate geographical knowledge across Europe. Münster's meticulous and critical approach to geography helped establish modern scientific cartography.
