17 John Hawkesworth (1715–1773) – Charts of Savage Isle, Palmerston Isle, Turtle Isle, and Harveys Isle – Copper Engraving (1777)

This detailed nautical chart presents four separate inset maps of islands discovered or confirmed during the British expeditions into the South Pacific. The insets chart the outlines, topographical features, and anchorages of Savage Isle (Niue), Palmerston Isle, Turtle Isle (Vatoa, Fiji), and Harveys Isle (Manuae, Cook Islands). This multi-panel chart documents the remote discoveries made during Captain Cook's Second Voyage and was included as a crucial geographical record in the official published account, A Voyage Towards the South Pole.
John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official narratives of the Pacific voyages, including those of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, and Cook. His massive work, An Account of the Voyages, established the format for the later official publications, making him a major figure in the dissemination of European knowledge about the Pacific and Southern oceans.
