15 John Hawkesworth (1715–1773) – Chart of the Discoveries Made in the South Atlantic Ocean in H.M. Ship Resolution – Copper Engraving (1777)

This historical nautical chart details the discoveries made by Captain James Cook in the remote South Atlantic Ocean, specifically charting South Georgia (Isle of Georgia) and the South Sandwich Islands (Sandwich Land), which he claimed for Britain in January 1775. The map shows the track of the HMS Resolution through these icy waters and delineates the coastal profiles of the newly discovered landmasses. This chart was published in the official account of Cook's Second Voyage, A Voyage Towards the South Pole, a volume often associated with the series compiled and edited by John Hawkesworth.
John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor who was commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official accounts of several major voyages. His massive, three-volume work, An Account of the Voyages, was a major literary and commercial success of the Enlightenment, making him one of the most prominent disseminators of geographical and ethnographic knowledge of the Pacific and Southern oceans.
