This detailed nautical chart presents a complete survey of the island of Otaheite (Tahiti) and the adjacent island of Eimeo (Moorea), both located in French Polynesia. The chart accurately renders the coastline, major bays, and interior topography, including the location of Point Venus, which was the observation point for the 1769 Transit of Venus. This precision survey was originally executed by Lieutenant James Cook during his first great Pacific voyage and was published in the highly influential British publication, An Account of the Voyages, edited by John Hawkesworth.

John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor who was commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official accounts of several major voyages, including those of Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook. His massive, three-volume work, An Account of the Voyages, was a major literary and commercial success of the Enlightenment, making him one of the most prominent disseminators of geographical and ethnographic knowledge of the Pacific.
