13 John Hawkesworth (1715–1773) – Charts of Queen Charlotte's Islands Harbours and Bays – Copper Engraving (1773)

This detailed nautical chart presents a series of eight separate engraved plans of various harbors and coastal sections of the Queen Charlotte's Islands (Santa Cruz Islands) in the Pacific Ocean. The insets chart specific anchorages, bays, and topographical features like Swallow Harbour and Cape Upright Bay, often including navigational soundings for depth. This work documents the strategic areas encountered by the British expeditions of the late 1760s, notably Captain Philip Carteret's voyage. This chart was published in the highly influential British publication, An Account of the Voyages, which compiled the official journals of Cook, Carteret, and others.
John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor who was commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official accounts of several major voyages. His massive, three-volume work, An Account of the Voyages, was a major literary and commercial success of the Enlightenment, making him one of the most prominent disseminators of geographical and ethnographic knowledge of the Pacific.
