This richly colored historical scene depicts Margaret of Anjou, Queen of Henry VI of England, kneeling in prayer alongside the ladies of her court. The figures are rendered in sumptuous 15th-century dress, meticulously illustrating the ornate patterns of their gowns and the high, elaborate headdresses of the era. The scene is copied from the celebrated Coventry Tapestry in St. Mary’s Hall, Coventry, England, and documents medieval courtly life, fashion, and religious customs. This plate was published in Henry Shaw’s monumental work on historical costumes and material culture, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries.
