212 Henry Shaw (1800–1873) – The Clasp of the Emperor Charles V – Hand-coloured Engraving (1843)

This detailed color illustration depicts a magnificent jeweled Clasp, traditionally attributed to Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire (c. 1530). The highly ornate piece is rendered in gold, set with colored cabochon gems (rubies, sapphires, emeralds) and pearls, centered around the iconic two-headed Imperial eagle. This archaeological print meticulously documents a significant piece of historical regalia and was published as a plate in Henry Shaw’s monumental work on medieval history and costume, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries.
Henry Shaw was a British architect, draughtsman, and antiquarian illustrator known for his scrupulous dedication to reproducing historical and architectural details. His career focused on rescuing the visual history of the English past through imposing, richly illustrated books.
