This set of two zoological plates features different species of Armadillo (L'Encubert and the Cabassou), showcasing the armor-plated mammals native to Central and South America. The left plate depicts the Encoubert Armadillo resting on a pedestal before classical ruins, while the right plate shows the Cabassou Armadillo in a richly detailed landscape. These prints exemplify the dramatic and often highly stylized artistic approach of the 18th-century Enlightenment, placing specimens in grand, imaginative settings. Both engravings were published in the monumental French natural history compendium, the Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière.

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, was a celebrated French naturalist, mathematician, and philosopher whose Histoire Naturelle was one of the most ambitious scientific publications of the 18th century, spanning 36 volumes. As the King's Superintendent of the Royal Garden (Jardin du Roi), Buffon directed a vast project to describe and categorize the entire natural world, with the illustrations commissioned from leading artists like Jacques de Sève and engraved by a large team of specialists.
