This detailed geographical map charts Eastern Tartary, a vast region encompassing present-day Manchuria (China) and the Russian Far East, including the remote island of Sakhalin. The map highlights the Amur River system and the frontier regions that were subject to growing geopolitical tensions between the Russian and Chinese empires in the 18th century. The cartouche notes that the map's precise geographical information was drawn from the surveys conducted by Jesuit missionaries. This map was created by Bellin and published in the encyclopedic compilation, the Histoire Générale des Voyages.
