7 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of Chin-Chew or Chang-Chew Bay with the Islands of Xiamen and Kinmen – Copper Engraving (Circa 1749)

This detailed hydrographic map charts the strategic coastal area of Fujian Province in China, encompassing the bays of Chin-Chew and Chang-Chew. The map prominently features the key islands of Emowi (modern Xiamen, a major port for the tea trade) and Quemowi (modern Kinmen). As a maritime chart, it includes navigational indicators, coastal detail, and topographical renderings of the mainland province of Fokien. This map was created by Bellin as the French Hydrographer to the King and published in the influential geographical compilation, the Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly significant French cartographer, hydrographer, and geographer of the 18th century. Appointed Chief Cartographer and Ingénieur de la Marine to the French Navy, he produced an immense and highly regarded body of work, known for its precision and clarity. His specialized charts and maps, which formed the foundation of French maritime knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment, were widely disseminated through major publications like the Histoire Générale des Voyages.
