79 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – View of Hu Keu Hyen, Taken from Nieuhof – Engraving (Circa 1760)

This detailed topographical print captures a view of the fortified town of Hu Keu Hyen (likely Hukou in Jiangxi province), China. The town is strategically situated at the base of dramatic, rocky hills, with its defensive walls visible and Chinese junks navigating the waterway in the foreground. The image documents a significant, heavily fortified settlement within Imperial China, often found in the inland sections of travel narratives. This illustration was published in an exhaustive 18th-century European geographical compilation, such as the Histoire Générale des Voyages, with its visual information drawn from the earlier works of the Dutch explorer Johan Nieuhof.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly significant French cartographer, hydrographer, and geographer of the 18th century. Appointed Chief Cartographer and Ingénieur de la Marine to the French Navy, he produced an immense and highly regarded body of work, known for its precision and clarity. His illustrations and maps were foundational to French and European geographical knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment and were widely disseminated through major publications.
