78 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – City of Loango, Taken from Dapper – Engraving (Circa 1748)
This detailed bird's-eye view depicts the City of Loango (Mbanza Loango), the former capital of the Kingdom of Loango in West Central Africa (modern Congo). The print shows the city laid out in distinct blocks with fortifications and prominent structures identified by a lettered key in the upper margin. The foreground is animated with ethnographic scenes of the local populace, providing a visual record of the settlement and its inhabitants. This view was published in 18th-century European travel compendiums, such as the Histoire Générale des Voyages, and was based on the earlier, influential description of Africa by the Dutch writer Olfert Dapper.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a highly significant French cartographer, hydrographer, and geographer of the 18th century. Appointed Chief Cartographer and Ingénieur de la Marine to the French Navy, he produced an immense and highly regarded body of work, known for its precision and clarity. His illustrations and maps were foundational to French and European geographical knowledge during the Age of Enlightenment and were widely reproduced by other publishers.
